Virgil van Dijk sends message to Trent Alexander-Arnold ahead of Liverpool return

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Liverpool team-mates have reacted to his Instagram post following England’s 2-0 win over Finland on Tuesday night.

The 25-year-old won the player of the match award for the second time in as many games and has received widespread praise for his performances for England.

Trent has never been a regular starter for England until now, but now, under interim manager Lee Carsley, it looks like England fans could be about to see the same elite level from the Reds’ number 66 as Liverpool fans.

Having been deployed as a holding midfielder with mixed success by Gareth Southgate at this summer’s Euros, it now appears Carsley is set to utilise Trent in his natural position of right-back, where he has dominated on the pitch for Liverpool over the last five years.

Reaction to Trent’s post

After England’s victory, Trent was awarded the player of the match award, his second in four days, and he posted pictures of himself with each award as well as a collection of other snaps from the international break.

Some of the Liverpool vice-captain’s team-mates have now commented on his post, including on-loan winger Kaide Gordon who simply commented: “Shock.”

Reds captain Virgil van Dijk was also in the comments with a clapping emoji and Virgil’s centre-back partner Ibrahima Konate commented: “Again!”

A number of other current and former Liverpool players liked the post on Instagram, including Anfield legend Steven Gerrard.

Liverpool’s defense

Trent has now made five competitive appearances for club and country this season and is yet to concede a goal.

He is the only member of Liverpool’s defence who can still claim that title, but Liverpool’s defensive unit has looked monstrous this season.

With the exception of the first 45 minutes of Liverpool’s opening game against Ipswich Town, when Jarell Quansah played, Liverpool’s defence consisted mainly of Trent, Virgil, Konate and Andy Robertson.

While that back four will be familiar to Liverpool fans, they have already shown improvement under Arne Slot by keeping three consecutive clean sheets in the league, something Liverpool had not managed since the 2022/23 season.

Trent is in excellent form and will join his Liverpool team-mates on the pitch this weekend when Liverpool look to extend their perfect run against Nottingham Forest at Anfield on Saturday.
