Trent Alexander-Arnold will play a huge role in the future of this England team.
In recent years, the right-back position has been in high demand, which almost justified its absence. But that is no longer the case today.
Kyle Walker is 34, Kieran Trippier has announced his international retirement and Reece James has also had injury problems. If Walker is not available and Alexander-Arnold is not playing there, who will?
There is a very good chance he will flourish playing for England and that will make the game better.
Traditionally, international football is not about having players who can extend games but that could be the X-factor for England going forward.
The fact that Lee Carsley has played him in his first two games also seems to be a significant sign. And it wasn’t in central midfield – where Alexander-Arnold could have played if he wanted to – but in that right-back position.
And that’s where he’ll play an important role, in my opinion, for England in the future.
That’s not to say Walker won’t be playing in the World Cup in two years, but he’ll also be 36 by then.
If it’s not Walker, then it’s hard to look past Alexander-Arnold.
